You can complete Induction doing ad hoc short term supply teaching work. To start induction you must hold qualified teacher status (QTS) and be registered with us in the category of school teacher, any periods of employment undertaken before registering in the correct category cannot count towards induction.
Submitting paperwork
If you're a newly qualified teacher (NQT) doing day to day supply work you must submit the Induction as a Short Term Supply Teacher notification form to us. Once we have processed your form, we will email you with details of how to record your supply sessions with us, and how to access your online induction profile.
If your employment circumstances change at any point during your Induction please email us at
Requirements of induction and timescales for completion
The induction period is three school terms, or the equivalent. However, the appropriate body (AB) has the discretion to reduce the length of the induction period for NQTs who can demonstrate their teaching practice meets the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership in less than three school terms/380 sessions. Induction cannot be completed in less than one term (110 sessions).
NQTs who are doing induction via short term supply work can accrue sessions towards induction. A session is defined as a full morning, or afternoons teaching in a school. Only periods of employment where you are employed as a qualified teacher can count. All periods of employment you undertake as qualified teacher in a state-maintained school/PRU in Wales must count towards your induction. There is no flexibility and you cannot request that a period of employment does not count towards your induction. Work undertaken as a school learning support worker, or cover supervisor cannot count towards your induction.
NQTs who gained QTS between 1 April 2003 and 6 November 2022 will have five years from 7 November 2022 to complete induction. NQTs who gain QTS from 7 November 2022 onwards, will have five years from the date QTS is awarded to complete induction.
If you are unable to complete induction within the required timescales, the Appropriate Body (AB) has discretion to extend the time limit completing induction, where it is satisfied that there are good reasons for doing so, and you are in agreement. Further information is available in the Welsh Government guidance induction for newly qualified teachers in Wales. Failure to complete induction within the required timescales will mean you are no longer able to register with EWC in the category of school teacher, and therefore unable to be employed as a teacher in a maintained school, or pupil referral unit in Wales.
Logging short term supply sessions
We are responsible for keeping a central accurate record of supply sessions completed.
In addition to logging sessions with us, you also have to have your sessions verified by the schools you have worked at. You must record these in the record of attendance section of your Induction profile. The record of attendance form for short term supply teachers is maintained offline and then uploaded to your Induction profile in line with the timescales set out in your profile.
Allocating Induction Mentors
NQTs completing Induction via day to day supply work in Wales are allocated an Induction Mentor (IM). Once an IM has been allocated, their name will be visible via your MyEWC account. Your IM will contact you directly via email. Please notify us at
Online induction profile
As an NQT you need to complete and maintain your Induction Profile online via the Professional Learning Passport (PLP). You're responsible for maintaining your Induction Profile and for identifying and recording evidence of how you meet the Professional Standards for Teaching and Leadership through your professional practice. You will be able to access your online Induction Profile once we have received and processed your short term supply teacher notification form, and you have logged your first session of supply work with us.
