We’ve published our Annual Report and Accounts, which sets out our key achievements and performance against our strategic objectives for 2019-20.

Angela Jardine, Chair of the EWC said:

“Our work has expanded once again over the past year as we seek to fulfil our statutory responsibility to improve standards of teaching and the quality of learning in Wales.

“As this year drew to a close our registrants have faced significant challenges, which none of us could have predicted. I must commend all colleagues and partners in the education sector for the way they have responded and adapted to the COVID-19 crisis.”

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank both the staff and members of the Council and its committees for their commitment and professionalism, which I know will continue in the coming years. I look forward to working with them to implement the Council’s Strategic Plan for 2020-23.”

Key achievements

Some of the key achievements detailed in the report include:

• We launched our revised Code of Professional Conduct and Practice. We supported this through regular support sessions and presentations for our registrants, building on our good practice guides and publishing a guide for parents in partnership with Parentkind.
• We accredited four new programmes of initial teacher education through our ITE Accreditation Board. Two of these were alternative routes into teaching which widen access to the profession.
• We were commissioned to deliver and develop the nationally recognised Quality Mark for Youth Work in Wales with ETS Wales. The Quality Mark assures young people, their parents, guardians, funders, partner organisations and other organisations of high quality youth work provision.
• We led work nationally to develop Educators Wales, the new brand and digital platform to promote careers in the education workforce in Wales. The new platform will support existing practitioners in accessing professional learning and career opportunities, and provide valuable information to those thinking of joining the workforce.

This year in numbers

• At 31 March, there were 80,119 practitioners on our Register and we had processed over 12,000 new applications for registration.
• 124,000 online checks were made by employers and public during the year.
• We concluded 308 fitness to practise cases and completed 215 suitability for registration assessments.
• At 31 March, our Code of Professional Conduct and Practice had been downloaded over 25,000 times.
• We gave 450 presentations and support sessions to students, registrants, employers and stakeholders during the year.
• The number of practitioners using the PLP had reached 25,318 by the end of March.
• We issued QTS certificates to 1,074 students and supported 3,500 NQTs and their mentors as part of the statutory induction programme.
