The Education Workforce Council (EWC) has extended its congratulations to everyone receiving their Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in Wales today (1 August 2025).
Earning QTS is a significant milestone and a testament to each individual’s commitment, resilience, and dedication to the teaching profession. It marks the beginning of an exciting and rewarding journey, shaping the lives of learners across Wales and making a lasting impact in schools and local communities.
In order to achieve QTS, individuals must undertake a period of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) during which they must meet a set of professional standards. These standards, together with the Code of Professional Conduct and Practice, set the benchmark for what is expected of practitioners throughout their career.
The Code is a key document which sets out the standards expected of those registered with the EWC and is intended to support and guide a registrant’s behaviours and judgements as professionals working in education and training roles in Wales.
Interim Chief Executive of the EWC, Lisa Winstone said “On behalf of everyone here at the EWC, I offer a huge llongyfarchiadau to everyone receiving their QTS today.
“We recognise the hard work and passion it takes to reach this point. By pursuing a career in teaching, you will have a significant impact on the lives of learners and young people right across Wales, as well as the broader education profession.
“As a registrant of the EWC, you are expected to comply with the Code. As the independent, professional regulator for the education workforce in Wales, we will be on hand to support you with this right throughout your career, offering resources and guidance to help you thrive in your role.
“We wish you every success and offer a very warm welcome to the profession.”
The EWC are responsible for administering QTS certificates and registering those newly qualified teachers (NQT) as they begin their careers.
For those NQTs moving into their first role as a school teacher, they are legally required to register with the EWC, in the correct category, before they can begin working in Wales. They must also complete a period of statutory induction within five years of gaining QTS.
For anyone still searching for their first role, Educators Wales features the highest number of vacancies from across Wales’ education sector.
